About us

The team behind Sgwâr

Ciao! We are Jane and Alessio. In 2016, after selling our bar & ice cream parlour in Tuscany, where Alessio is from, we moved our family back to Wales. In 2020 we transformed the ground floor of the old Midland / HSBC bank into a spacious and welcoming Italian style coffee shop and restaurant. It soon became a hub for local people to meet safely in an unusual year for us all. Switching seamlessly to take away during the numerous lockdowns, +39 remained open throughout this time, ensuring its standing in the community and serving as a constant when many other hospitality businesses remained closed. Our main priorities are consistency of service, product and opening hours, and we are transferring this outlook to our new venture, Sgwâr, which is the realisation of our long term plan for the old building to remain a vital part of Menai Bridge.

What makes Sgwâr special

Plus 39 cafe Italian food

We are situated above our authentic Italian restaurant, Plus39, which is a hub for meeting friends for a coffee or a catch up over an Italian Pinsa and a glass of wine.

Come and experience Anglesey for yourself

How about a visit to Beaumaris castle or a boat trip along the Menai Straits to start your trip? The island is home to diverse wildlife, including seabirds and seals, making it a great spot for wildlife enthusiasts. We have miles of sandy coastlines, great spots for water sports like kayaking and surfing – it’s a paradise for those who love the outdoors.

Whether you’re looking to enjoy a leisurely stroll along the water, or indulge in some local cuisine, we’re sure you’ll enjoy your stay. Anglesey is renowned for its seafood by the way!

A historic island full of character

The Isle of Anglesey, or Ynys Môn in Welsh, has it’s own strong identity and community spirit.

Did you know?

  • Anglesey is known as “Môn Mam Cymru” (Anglesey Mother of Wales), credited with sustaining the nation with its fertile land.
  • The island is the home of Wales’ patron saint of lovers, Santes Dwynwen, a fourth-century Welsh princess who became a nun and set up a convent on Llanddwyn Island.
  • The Menai Straits is one of the best places in the UK to grow mussels and has been used since the Roman time. About 50% of UK mussel production is farmed along the Straits.
